Wake County Public School System is Hiring an Instructional Coach (Heroes Read Coordinator) Near Raleigh, NC

Overview

POSITION PURPOSE:

Partners with the administrative team to align the systems and structures of the school in which the position is located to promote a reflective and collaborative school culture around SMART literacy in reading, math, social studies, and science. Acts as a liaison between the school and the Magnet Office to implement and promote the program. Serves as the Site Coordinator for the Heroes Read program at the specific school. Provides job-embedded professional learning to improve the quality of classroom instruction resulting in increased student achievement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

  • Extensive knowledge of K-12 curricular standards adopted by the State of North Carolina;
  • Extensive knowledge of research-based literacy rich instructional strategies and curriculum design;
  • Extensive knowledge of and ability to utilize best practices in instructional technology;
  • Considerable knowledge of best practices to influence adult learning;
  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel; Google Apps;
  • Ability to raise teachers’ consciousness and skillfulness around effective instruction;
  • Ability to use multiple data sources for problem solving;
  • Ability to plan and deliver professional development;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university;
  • Five years of K-12 teaching experience;
  • Experience with planning and delivering professional training to adult learners;

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina Professional Educator’s K-6 license, or a 6-12 license in English, Science, Math, Social Studies, or Reading.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or Educational Leadership;
  • Experience working with volunteers to support literacy skills in students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attends all training for SMART and/or Heroes Read programs.
  • Acts as a liaison between staff (e.g., tutors, teachers, counselors, administrators, etc.) for the purpose of implementing and maintaining services within established guidelines and standards.
  • Advocates and provides professional learning for the purpose of educating staff members on SMART methodologies.
  • Collaborates with counseling and administrative teams for the purpose of addressing student needs.
  • Collaborates with grade level staff for the purpose of articulating the curriculum and activities of SMART.
  • Coordinates family workshops throughout the year for the purpose of ensuring parent involvement for students in the program.
  • Organizes and oversees the Heroes Read program, including, but not limited to: collaborating with site and community volunteers, recruiting new volunteers and sustaining returning volunteer involvement, creating a welcoming, organized, comfortable, dedicated reading space in the school; ensure that volunteers are trained and understand their role; ensure that volunteers feel comfortable and welcome; provide oversight during all reading sessions to help children and volunteers select books, answer questions, observe and offer reading tips, and work with administration to manage any risk involved; maintain the WCPSS book inventory at the site; ensure each child in the program has a volunteer; create weekly schedule for volunteers and students; share program details with all staff, including identification criteria for students who may be well-suited to participate; establish regular communication between co-Site Coordinators and/or Site Team Members, if applicable; actively participate in site visits and program assessments.
  • Oversees a variety of manual and electronic files and/or records for the purpose of providing up-to-date reference and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines; submits monthly reports on program data and statistics.
  • Oversees data collection, analysis, and submission for the purpose of improving the program.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares a wide variety of written materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written, reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Provides consistent interaction with students for the purpose of educating students.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information, and/or direction.
  • Reviews SMART students’ data regularly (e.g., monitors students’ grades in all classes, runs progress reports, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the success of students in the program.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    This position operates in various school environments. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, students, and the community. Work is considered light to medium physical work, requiring the exertion of up to 25 pounds of force at times.
